On July 20-25, 2016, the delegation of the International Union of Ecologists, Industrialists and Entrepreneurs headed by the President of the Union Mr. Oleg Oleinik, the representatives of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of industry and Commerce visited Thailand at the official invitation of the President of Thai-Russian Chamber of Commerce Dr. Sombat Thiratkoolchai.
In the course of the visit, the Russian delegation had meetings and negotiations with the representatives of the Government Authorities and business community, arranged by Thai-Russian Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the Trade Representation and the Embassy of Russia in Thailand.
On July 21, 2016 in Dusit Thani Hotel, Bangkok the Russian delegation and representatives of the Federation of Industries of Thailand, Chamber of Commerce of Thailand, Board of Investments of Thailand, Ministry of Commerce took part in the round-table “Russia-Thailand: horizons and mechanisms of cooperation”. The discussions of the event attracted a close attention of business society of both countries
At the business matching in his welcome speech the Trade Representative of the Russian Federation Mr. Oleg Maslennikov noted that at present, the world economy is facing enormous challenges. Both Russia and Thailand are trying to accommodate their economies to the global market turbulence by restructuring economic systems, seeking new growth engines and exploring opportunities for better competiveness. We are making efforts to stimulate exports and consumption, to shape efficient innovation policies and to leapfrog to knowledge-based economies. As an example, Russia has recently launched Priority Development Zones with a special stress on the Far East while Thailand has established Special Economic Zones to lure foreign investments and develop territories of the country. Russia is open to dialogue and ready for any proposals of cooperation.
The welcome address to the participants from the Russian Ministry of industry and commence was delivered by Ms. Dina Djimbaldorjieva, director of Asian countries’ department of the Ministry. In this address the Minister Mr. Denis Manturov wrote that the mutual trade between Russia and Thailand has seen a wave-like development for the last 5 years, the periods of a significant growth interchanged with the shrinking of trade. The reasons for the decrease in a bilateral volume of sales in 2015 were connected with a general situation in the global economy and the cut in prices for the main position of Russian export – crude oil. At the same time positive tendencies are evident, for example, the export of the production with a high degree of processing grew 11,6 times. We consider that today there are favorable conditions for the achievement of the challenge, set by the heads of Russia-Thai governments, that is to increase the volume of bilateral mutual trade up to $10 billion. Today the nomenclature of Russian export deliveries to Thailand is extending.
Members of TRCC - TPI Plc., CPF, Loxley Plc., Creatus Corp, TPI Polene Co., Ltd and others took an active part in the business matching

And of course, a lot of participants from business circles- Thailand’s leading companies, SME, banks etc. Yes, it was crowed for sure! But atmosphere in the auditorium was friendly and functional.
The Seminar was opened by H..E. Kirill Barsky, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Thailand, who informed about the present economic situation in Russia and focused on the bilateral business directions between Thailand and Russia. He delivered information on the most interesting projects of 2015 - on C.P. Group which is exploring opportunities for investment into Russian agriculture doing feed production, pig fattening and recently started poultry business. Besides, CPF, which became known under the slogan “The Kitchen of the World” provides successful trade business in Russia. H..E. The Russian Ambassador noted that Far East is the unique place for investors, as it offers lands, infrastructure and tax benefits for businessmen, Sutech’s Far East investment is a good example as well as CP Group, which also plans to expand agricultural activity in Far East.
H.E. Kirill Barsky mentioned that Thailand’s people often claim on absence of appropriated information on Russian economy, business, culture, education etc. and gave a floor to Mr. Eugene Abov, Publisher of “Russia Beyond The Headlines”, the Vice President of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, who said that this gap could be filled in by good cooperation between Russian and domestic print editions.
Photo: left - Mr. Eugene Abov, Publisher of “Russia Beyond The Headlines”, right - Ms. Fawzia Modni, the former Associate Vice President International Media Marketing of The Times Group
Russia Beyond The Headlines has two years of successful experience, it enjoys results of fruitful cooperation with the leading Thailand’s newspaper the Nation . Mr. E. Abov in his speech on “Current Images of Russia in Thailand & ASEAN” gave a clear picture of such cooperation’s benefits. His speech was supported by Ms. Fawzia Modni, the former Associate Vice President International Media Marketing of The Times Group, the leading media organization in India and Asia. She shared her professional experience, which covers print, television, radio, digital, seminars and conferences talked on long term cooperation with Russia Beyond The Headlines in India and success of collaboration with top world editions.
The bright color in the block of print media was painted by Mr. Pana Janwitness, President of Nation News Network Company. Taking about cooperation with Russian media, he expressed his vision of positive results of fruitful career of two newspapers and very positive comments on this matter from Thai and Russian readers.
If in simplified form we can disjoint the Seminar on two parts and say that the first one was devoted to print media, definitely, the second part was dedicated business projects. For example, C.P. Group lifted the veil on its investment’s plan in Russia and presented the report on the topic ”the CPG Vision on Russian business development in 2015-2020”. Upon the authorization of Mr. Nutthakrit Sivasri, Chairman (overseas operations) CP Group of companies, Dr. Sombat Thiratrakoolchai, Senior Vice President CPF and the current president of TRCC told about plans to invest not only in Central part of Russia but also in Siberia and Far East.

One more presentation attracted a special attention of the Seminar’s participants - the project created by The Thai-Sturgeon farm and Caviar House. Mr. Noppadon Khamsai, Managing director The Thai-Sturgeon farm told about the Russian project of sturgeon breeding, how the Kaspian Sea’s species sailed to Thailand and accustomed the Thais for black caviar. Five years ago together with the Russian partner Mr. Alexy Tyutin they established the Thai-Sturgeon company and constructed the sturgeon breeding farm in Hua-Hin and how they supply the Thai market with top quality black caviar. In 2007 in Russia 10- years ban was imposed on sturgeon catch and black caviar export. At the same time demand for the black caviar is high as before and even more, after all the sturgeon population has decreased and it is getting harder to get it. Potential solution of the problem is aqua cultural fish breeding. The market situation began to change again because of the aquaculture development. The joint Russian-Thai project of the Thai-Sturgeon farm is a vivid example of breeding of unique aqua species and caviar already is available in some Five star hotels, best restaurants and a couple of retail nets.

One more topic won a highest attention of listeners – “Russian tourists to come back to Thailand”. It was reported by Mr. Visanu Jaroensilp, Deputy Governor for tourism products and business tourism of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) , who represented TAT in Russia during four years and did know the matter from inside and outside. Mr. Visanu Jaroensilp said that last year 1, 730, 000 Russian tourists visited Thailand but due to a serious fall of the Russian currency’s value to US Dollar the number of Russian tourists was decreased on 48% but five star hotels lost 10-15% of the Russians only. TAT expects some revival on the market of tourism in December 2015-February 2016 as operators inform on growing interest of the Russians for the pick season this year. He concluded that Tourism Authority of Thailand predicts the following figures- 1 million tourists from Russia in 2015 and 1, 2 million in 2016. At present TAT is working under new programs for Russian tourists including tour destinations, guide service and directs currency exchange from Rubles into Thai baht.
The topic of direct currency exchange also was included into presentation “Economic relations between Thailand and Russia”, delivered by Dr. Siwat Luangsomboon, Head-Research of Kasikorn bank Plc. I want to say that directs Rubles to Baht exchange is one of the most important topics, widely discussed in business society as it is a key factor in financial relations and transactions in a trade between Thailand and Russia. Absence of appropriate financial mechanisms is an obstacle in bilateral trade and investments. Russian state agencies and banking structures, including the Central Bank of Russia and a number of private banks, welcome the establishment of correspondent relations between banking institutions of both countries, the opening of branches of Thai banks in Moscow and other Russian cities, transition to a new system of transactions in national currencies, swap arrangements etc. The leading Thailand’s bank - Kasikorn bank (Thai farmers’ bank) plans to establish a branch in Russia in a close future.

The seminar ended with a very fruitful Q&A session where participants shared their experiences about doing business in Thailand and Russia, as well as thanks for the organizers for putting together this event.
No doubt, the outcome from the seminar is the point-of-departure to a strong ignition of the Thai and Russian business-communities to stand up and shake the unfortunate slow-pace of economic growth, and starting to speed up into a bigger scale of trade and investment between the two countries.
We need more attention, we need more movement, and we need more interaction between the business sectors of the two countries. Now the world economic is in a slow pace, but let’s prepare ourselves to be ready for the faster pace when the economic is picked up in few years. Do not wait to drain-off, but be always active and be ready to execute, when the time comes! We do need cooperation from everyone.
